The Witcher Film in Development, Oscar-Nominated Animator Involved
Although there’s already been a film based on the book, there hasn’t been a Witcher film since the video games propelled the IP to international acclaim. That’s going to change over the next year or so, with news out of the Polish Film Institute that Oscar nominated animator Tomasz Bagiński is working on an adaptation.
Fans of the franchise might recognise that name from his work on The Witcher 2 and The Wicher 3 – he animated the opening movie. Tomasz is also well-known in his own right. His animation The Cathedral was nominated for an Oscar in 2003.
So it’s fair to presume it’ll be an animated entry in the franchise, given that’s where the film maker’s history primarily lies, but at this point we know absolutely nothing beyond that assumption (and it isn’t even a very good one). When asked about the film, he said that it was very much in the early stages of development, and that fans would have to wait until the end of the year to find out more.
It’s definitely a franchise that has enough story in it to be worth a feature film outing. It’s more than likely that the video game series will serve as the basis for it, so expect all your favourite characters and locations.
