Playstation 4 Sells 1 Million In 24 Hours

PS4 Console

The Playstation 4 broke the 1 million units sold mark in 24 hours. Since the system isn’t available in Europe yet (it will be on November 29, Februrary 2014 in Japan), this number only refers to North American retail sales. To put this in perspective, the Playstation 3 only sold 197,000 units in its first two weeks. Here’s more from the official press release:

TOKYO, Nov. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the highly anticipated launch of the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system resulted in 1 million units sold through during the first 24 hours after it became available on November 15, 2013 in the United States and Canada.

“PS4™ was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Despite these impressive numbers, however, things haven’t exactly gone without a hitch. There are numerous reports by consumers claiming their shiny new consoles were dead on arrival thanks to faulty HDMI ports, and the Playstation Network hasn’t been playing nice, frequently dropping players from connection or just flat out not working. Sony is saying that these broken consoles are isolated incidents, and they very well could be. However, we won’t know the exact failure rate for a couple of months – they might be isolated for now, but who knows if already working consoles won’t kick the bucket in a couple of weeks.
