Killing Floor 3 Season 4 ‘Shadow Hunter’ Adds Gunslinger Perk, Free Weekend
Tripwire Interactive has launched the fourth seasonal update for Killing Floor 3, “Operation: Shadow Hunter,” bringing the long-awaited Gunslinger perk, a new boss and a fresh top-end difficulty tier to the co-op horror shooter. Season 4, titled ‘Operation: Shadow Hunter’, sees Nightfall specialists venture to the Nordic North Sea to explore a mire-infested oil rig and the horrors it has unleashed. The update lands alongside a free-to-play trial marking the game’s first anniversary.
Joining the team to explore the new map is the highly-anticipated Gunslinger perk, which includes an armory of dual-wielded pistols and high-tech gadgets for dispatching Zeds and the second phase of dual-wield support for the remaining sidearms. The perk has been on Tripwire’s roadmap since early in the year, when the studio confirmed the highly anticipated Gunslinger and dual-wielding sidearms are making a spectacular return, with the first dual-wieldable weapons, the Krait (Engineer) and Bloodhound P330s (Commando), arriving that spring.
Dr. Moorcroft Emerges as Season 4’s Central Boss
The update also introduces the elusive Dr. Moorcroft as a new boss and adds a ‘Suicidal’ difficulty level, giving players a challenge between ‘Hard’ and ‘Hell-on-Earth’ currently in-game. Tripwire’s own community post ahead of launch described the character as far more than a random monster: “Dr. Moorcroft and Mr…” material notes that many know him as the chief scientist and director of Horzine’s R&D Red division. According to the developer, those who go digging or end up on the wrong end of one of his experiments may find that Moorcroft’s been quietly studying the effects of a transmutative substance called the Mire on living subjects, with research that began by experimenting with Zeds before growing into a belief that the Mire can jump-start the next stage in human evolution.
The boss ties into a narrative arc that has run since launch. Tripwire’s own FAQ confirms that new seasons will further develop the ongoing narrative of Nightfall, Horzine, and rogue scientist Dr. Emmanuel Moorcroft, introducing new assignments and challenge-driven content. Season 3’s “Operation: Deep Freeze,” released in March, had already tracked the scientist to Antarctica before this latest chase moves the hunt to an oil platform in the North Sea.
Supply Pass Refresh and Quality-of-Life Fixes Round Out the Patch
Beyond the headline additions, players can also expect a Supply Pass refresh with free and paid tracks, performance optimizations, new achievements, quality of life improvements and more with Operation: Shadow Hunter. Independent outlet GameTikker, corroborating the patch’s scope, reported that the update brings the new Oil Rig survival map, the highly-anticipated Gunslinger perk, and the formidable boss Dr. Moorcroft, alongside the new Suicidal difficulty and refreshed Supply Pass tracks, hot-joining and weapon mod selection improvements among other quality-of-life changes.
Much of that polish traces back to the direct feedback loop Tripwire has run since launch. In an official Steam Community post previewing the season, the studio wrote that it had been reading every single response from community surveys, that players had made clear they wanted more difficulty options and had called out specific quality-of-life improvements, and that these were the items the team was acting on.
Free-to-Play Weekend Marks the Shooter’s First Anniversary
To coincide with Season 4, Tripwire is opening the game up to newcomers at no cost. To celebrate the first anniversary of the game Tripwire Interactive announced that Killing Floor 3 is free-to-play for a limited time on PC (via Steam and EGS), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S from July 23 through July 27. During that window, new players will have access to the full game including the latest seasonal update and all other updates including the recently added Onslaught map and text chat support, with all progress saved and available after purchasing the game, and all three editions and Seasonal DLC Passes on all platforms discounted 50% off their regular price.
For gamers across New Zealand and Australia, the trial and discount run on the same global schedule as the North American and European launch, meaning the July 23–27 window lines up with a weekend for local players to sample the horde shooter, its Nordic oil rig setting and the new Gunslinger perk before deciding whether to commit to a purchase.
Modding Support and Seasonal Events Teased for the Rest of 2026
Tripwire used the Season 4 launch to look further ahead as well. The developer also shared an updated development roadmap detailing the content ahead for Killing Floor 3 including the return of popular seasonal events and a first look at plans for mod support across all platforms. Independent coverage of the studio’s post-launch plans has previously flagged mod support as a priority, noting that the developers promise ongoing work on performance, balance tweaks, text chat, new difficulty options, and modding support — and that official support could extend the game’s life significantly while honoring the series’ historical modding culture.
Creative director Bryan Wynia has framed the post-launch cadence as central to the game’s identity from the start. At launch in July 2025, he said Tripwire’s plan was for players to expect new maps, new perks, new specialists, new weapons, and new enemies in the coming months following launch, a promise the studio has now carried through four seasonal drops. Independent outlet Inven Global similarly reported at the time that Wynia emphasized the launch represented only the opening salvo for Killing Floor 3, with the studio planning to expand the experience with additional maps, perks, specialists, weapons and enemies over the coming months.
With Operation: Shadow Hunter now live, Killing Floor 3’s first year closes out with four seasonal content drops delivered on a roughly quarterly cadence since launch. Whether the free trial converts a meaningful wave of new players will be the next data point worth watching for a game that split reviewers at launch but has kept building on its foundation ever since.
