Considering its manufacturer is best known for flashy, gamer-oriented accessories, Razer’s Barracuda X headset is the last thing you might expect, stylistically. Do not be fooled by its modest appearance, however, as this is one headset that boasts serious multi-platform compatibility. The Barracuda X accepts both wired and wireless connections (through its own USB-C dongle) that is compatible with PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Android mobile devices. Very reminiscent of Razer’s Opus line, the Barracuda offers a seamless comfort with little to no pressure on the ears – perfect for on-the-go or extended gaming sessions.
The Barracuda X’s somewhat subdued design matches exceptionally well with its multi-platform compatibility – one of its main selling points. This is not just a gaming headset, it is meant to be a jack of all trades for phone, gaming, and work purposes. The microphone, on the other hand, is a different story altogether. The detachable mic offers fairly clear and full audio while sacrificing some of the cleanliness otherwise enjoyed by this headset. In addition, since the mic is detachable and is therefore fixed while attached, the headset becomes far less portable (in my mind, anyway) when the mic is on.
While this may narrow its utility ever so slightly, the Barracuda X more than makes up for it with its plug-and-play USB-C wireless dongle that supports PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android and PC connectivity. For those without a USB-C port on their computer, Razer has generously provided an adapter cable to allow you to conveniently place the dongle for your needs. Honestly, this is one of the strongest wireless dongles I have ever tested, staying strong within 30+ feet and down one flight of stairs – not too shabby at all!
While plenty capable, the Barracuda X does fall slightly short for those looking for large dynamic ranges and booming bass. Its virtual surround is fully functional, meaning it is well-suited to gaming purposes, as well as almost any other audio function. My sole complaint would be that it just does not keep pace with some of its competitors when the tunes come on. Honestly, this is a very small concession to make and as each person’s EQ balance preferences are different, do take this with a grain of salt.
Overall, I really enjoyed the Barracuda X and its focus on multi-platform compatibility. Almost everyone I know uses multiple devices for gaming or work, and most of us are juggling devices and compatible accessories, so it is always nice to find one that can work in as many different ways as Razer’s Barracuda X. The comfort level is also fantastic, and the battery life just about sits around the gold standard of 20 hours active time. Where this headset loses a bit for me is on the clunkiness of its microphone and the somewhat lackluster dynamic audio range. Retailing at $99 USD, this headset is a strong option for those looking to grab one headset for all of their devices.
