Star Wars Gravitrax Review
GamesReviews has reviewed a ton of toys over the past half decade, and most of them are flashes in the pan. A few obvious brands stick out, and some less obvious. I think it is no surprise to anyone that LEGO and Playmobil are a big thing with my 10 year old and 6 year old, but one other toy has also caught their attention.
This is NOT a flash-in-the-pan experience either, although there is a lot of flash. When we first reviewed Gravitrax, we gave the toy a solid 10/10 and called it the best toy our kids have ever owned. And yes, that means trumping LEGO and Playmobil, of which they have plenty. We’ve been trying to review as much Gravitrax as possible over the past few years, but this latest release takes the cake – are you ready to go to a galaxy, far far away? Let’s take a look at Star Wars Gravitrax!
I want to go back and revisit some of the things we said about Gravitrax when we first reviewed, and gave a perfect score to, the original starter set:
“GraviTrax is definitely a flashy toy, and it looks really cool. That being said, not everything that comes packaged with flash and flair delivers on what is most important – the usefulness and playability of the toy. To date, marble track toys haven’t been all that in-depth, ranging from mass produced plastic tubes that carry metal spheres down from the top of the track to the bottom, or homemade wooden sets that function much the same. Never has anyone really attempted to do what Ravensburger has done, and that is what sets GraviTrax apart.”
A few companies have tried to somewhat replicate the success of Gravitrax with middling results, but release after release, Ravensburger takes their hit toy to brand new levels of fun and excitement. So while the next logical leap perhaps was not Star Wars, me and the kids are definitely here for it.
So what makes this release so much different then past releases? When you dig below the surface, this is definitely just more Gravitrax. More towers, more stacking base plates, more tracks, and more curves. More is always good, but Ravensburger is trying to deliver more than just…well more.
Think of the Star Wars addition as a skin for an already popular toy. The marbles are just a bit different, with nifty designs that shimmer and shine as the ball flies down the tracks. And like with the relatively new Gravitrax JR sets, Ravensubrger has added some decorations in the box to give your tracks a bit of flair. Whether you choose the light side or the dark side of the force, your balls can race and drop through a labyrinth of turrets, X-Wings, and Tie Fighters. While it would be ridiculous to say that balls flying through the course could be likened to X-Wings flying through the Death Star, I’m going to say it anyways. That’s exactly the feeling I get, and likely what Gravitrax and Ravensburger envisioned with this partnership. At least I like to think so.
If that wasn’t cool enough, all of your future builds can be expertly created using the massive Death Star base, or either of the new, themed platforms: the MIllenium Falcon and or a Star Destroyer. With base Gravitrax, we have become used to the square bases that interlock and the hexagonal, clear raised platforms. These new bases and platforms give your track a lot of really cool flair, a must have in our opinion for Star Wars fans.
There are plenty of great tracks and features to get excited about with this release of Gravitrax, including tubes, transfer accessories, and more. There is great value in this set, and the added Star Wars overlay just adds to the joy. While a lot of this will get mixed into our bins of Gravitrax over time, the kids’ love for all the cool Star Wars additions will then get integrated into all of their future marble towers!
