Playmobil T-Rex Hunt Review
A few years ago, Playmobil ran a line of futuristic dinosaur themed playsets called Dino Rise, and while my son was really into dinosaurs, I think all the guns, lasers, cannons, and more threw him off a bit and the set wasn’t as popular as I would have thought. With their new line of dinosaur sets hitting shelves this month, the Dinos theme from Playmobil is showing a lot of promise. We had the chance to look at the T-Rex Hunt set (71524), and are pretty impressed with what is being provided in this theme!
First and foremost, Dinos seems to be more about looking for and studying the dinosaurs that once called our planet home. Think Jurassic Park, but with Playmobil. There don’t seem to be cannons, guns, or anything like that this time around. It’s all about dinosaurs, dinosaur digs, and more. The T-Rex Hunt set is a great example of what Playmobil is looking to do with this lineup.
Getting the T-Rex Hunt set together was a piece of cake. As we have talked about many times, putting Playmobil together can be tricky, even for my middle son who is 10 years old. Tires, especially, can be hard to mount onto rims when building vehicles. There is a dirt bike and trailer in this set, but getting the tires on the rims was a piece of cake – in fact, the entire T-Rex Hunt build was pretty easy, and was quickly done between my 5 year old and my 10 year old.
There are a lot of loose pieces in this set, and for me that’s a bit of a downside. Don’t get me wrong, my kids love the plethora of dinosaur bones, research items, cameras, and more. I’m not as big of a fan because those pieces can get lost pretty easily. I love the big sets that mount together and where everything has a place to go – that isn’t really the case here.
Aside from that, however, this set is brilliant for those who love dinosaurs or the mighty T-Rex. The dinosaur included in this set requires no building at all – it is a single toy with adjustable legs, head, arms and mouth. I thought there would be some assembly required simply because of the size of the dinosaur, but was pleasantly surprised to find that wasn’t the case. We haven’t looked at other sets in this line yet, but I would assume if this T-Rex is one solid object, most of the dinosaurs should be.
There is a lot of fun to be had in this box, and while it’s not cheap 44.99 CAD, I think the price point is right for what you get in the box. If you are buying this set to be shared between multiple kids at once, I would suggest otherwise. While I normally argue that having at least two playable figures would make a Playmobil set shareable, this is a different situation – I think any kid is going to want to play and use the dinosaur, so having at least two of those would be a good idea. Thankfully, there are a lot of great sets in the Dinos theme lineup that add to this well!
