Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed (Steam)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed on Steam offers a new adventure for fans of the heroes in a half-shell, taking place after the events of the Mutant Mayhem movie. Developed by Aheartfulofgames and published by Outright Games, this platformer blends beat-’em-up action with light RPG elements and a narrative that aims to capture the spirit of the recent film of which I enjoyed.
Pizza Party
Mutants Unleashed primarily functions as a 3D beat-’em-up with platforming elements. Players can switch between Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, each possessing unique combat skills and upgradeable abilities unlocked through an RPG-like progression system . My Personal favorite turtle is Donnie. Combat in the game is not complex with the ability to achieve some shell shocking combos with new abilities to unlock. Add a friend in co-op mode to make the party even better. Being true to the movie the dialog brings some comedy to the game, which makes the experience fun. Mutants Unleashed sports a vibrant and cartoonish art style that fits the TMNT universe perfectly. The character models are well-designed, and the environments, from the city streets to underground labs, are colorful and detailed. It definitely captures the look and feel of a modern TMNT cartoon.
A big highlight of Mutants Unleashed is the local co-op for up to four players. Playing with friends as the different turtles is where the real fun kicks in. Coordinating attacks and reviving each other adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay and makes those tougher encounters much more enjoyable. It’s a fantastic game to play on the couch with your buddies.
While Mutants Unleashed delivers a good dose of turtle-powered action, it’s not without its flaws. The camera can occasionally be a bit wonky, especially during fast-paced combat. Some of the level design can feel a little repetitive at times. Overall difficulty might be a bit on the easier side for seasoned gamers which is okay with me. Additionally, the story, while enjoyable, isn’t particularly deep or groundbreaking.
A Shell of a Good Time
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed is a fun and action-packed adventure that will definitely appeal to fans of the franchise, especially younger players and those looking for a solid co-op experience. It captures the spirit of the TMNT with its engaging combat, colorful visuals, and humorous dialogue. While it might not reinvent the wheel or the pizza cutter! , it provides a satisfying dose of turtle power that’s perfect for a weekend gaming session with friends.
If you’re looking for a lighthearted, action-packed game to play solo or with friends, and you’re a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then Mutants Unleashed is definitely worth checking out. Just don’t expect a super deep or challenging experience it’s all about kicking shell and having a good time. Now, who wants pizza?
