Farming Simulator 25 – Flawed, Fun?
I’ve been dabbling in Farming Simulator for over a week now and while the game has a bunch of problems both on console and PC, I cannot help but continue to pick up the controller and maneuver my tractors around the map. I invest so much into Farming Simulator games because I know Giants Software will continue to work on the game for years to come. But I would be considered a super fan – should you invest?
Listen, right off the top I need to tell you that things are all hunky-dory with Farming Simulator 25. On the minor side of things, there are so many graphical hiccups, ranging from field cover coming and going, tractors emitting black triangles in all directions, things getting stuck in the earth, and more. Most of these are solved by resting the tractors to the shop, or restarting the game. Those are minimal problems, happening every few hours, and ones that will be easily fixed by Giants.
More concerning, at least on PlayStation 5, is the number of crashes I’ve experienced. Crashes suck, and even with auto save on (which only triggers when you enter the menu by the way) I’ve lost a TON of progress on my PlayStation 5 simply because the game continues to crash. Sow a field? The game might crash. Cut a bunch of trees? The game might crash. What causes these crashes is a mystery to me, and while things seem to have stabilized now, every time I load up my farm I’m worried about something going south.
And yet, despite all of this, I keep coming back to Farming Simulator 25. The new crop types have been so much fun to experiment with, and although they come with a bunch of new machinery you’ll need to buy, the pay off (at least with green beans) is phenomenal. I’ve found that most maps are FULL of these new crops, so even if you don’t get them going in your own farm, you can take on a contract or two to try out the machinery and what you can expect.
The GPS feature is also great, making doing my own farming easier than ever. I’ve always wanted to run my own tractors through my fields in previous games, but the perfectionist in me always got frustrated as I missed just a single row of corn, or a corner of a field when planting. With the GPS feature, there’s nothing to be worried about – just find your line, lock on, and away you go. It does give the work a bit of an automated feel, but a satisfying automated feel that your farm is going to look fantastic.
And let’s not pretend that GPS isn’t a real thing on farms across the world – why shouldn’t we take advantage of Farming Simulator 25!
I’m not putting a score on Farming Simulator right now for one specific reason – I think this game is only going to get better and better. What I will say is that if some hiccups are going to ruin your experience, perhaps take a pause and wait for a few updates to come out before diving into this simulation experience. I think it’s worth grabbing up now, but I definitely can see why others have some negative thoughts and opinions. Either way, by this time next year, Farming Simulator will be the shining jewel in the hat of Giants Software, and one of the best simulation games currently available!
