Bayonetta Nintendo Switch Review
Please check out my review-in-progress part 1 and part 2 of Bayonetta. Also you can check out Adam Roffel’s review of Bayonetta 2. What do I think of Bayonetta 1 though? What’s the final vedicit? Is the first Bayonetta a good game?
The story in Bayonetta is very hooky. Basically the game has a B-movie style plot. The dialogue is what you’d expect from such a movie too: corny with a lot of cursing. And to make matters worse, there are a lot of really long cutscenes in this game. Think Metal Gear Solid long. Ok, maybe not that long, but pretty close.
As you can tell, I’m not a fan of this games story. I suppose it could be worse. There were a few interesting moments and there is a mystery to this game that I’m sure some people will enjoy. I just found Bayonetta’s gameplay much more interesting than its story.
If you ever played any of the Devil May Cry games on Playstation, then you have a good idea of what type of gameplay you’ll find in Bayonetta. For those who didn’t play those games, Bayonetta is basically a fast paced third person game with lots of gunplay and fighting.
I played Bayonetta on Very Easy because I suck at games like this. I’m sure Bayonetta is super hard in other modes. I found Very Easy to live up to its name for the most part, with areas where there were escort missions (i hate escort missions) being the exception because those were really hard. And I’m glad the game was on Very Easy because that made Bayonetta’s gameplay fun for me.
This game is super fast paced. You won’t always know what you are doing. There are so many combos and things that Bayonetta can do. Some of the torture stuff is a bit gross. There are lots of quick time events, buttons that you have to push at the right time or you’ll die. There will be people who don’t like these events but I found them to be really cool. Baynonetta’s best moves can be found in them!
As for the game’s controls, Bayonetta is best played with the analog sticks and buttons. These work really well. The camera in this game can be frustrating at times, but thats really nothing new for a third person game such as this. Bayonetta also has touch screen controls in portable mode, though they feel gimmicky and don’t feel right at all for this type of game. Its neat that they were included. You can tell that the developer didn’t just port the game over from the Wii U. This also shows in the game’s graphics!
Bayonetta is most likely the best looking game on the Nintendo Switch. I haven’t played the second game, so its possible that game looked even better. I am very impressed by the first Bayonetta’s graphics though. All of the humans, enemies, and especially bosses are unique and interesting looking. The cutscenes in this game, especially, look great. Bayonetta should be played on the TV screen to show off how good it really looks, though the game does look good in portable mode too.
I wish the music in Bayonetta was a bit better though. Its not horrible, in fact I do like the game’s Fly Me to the Moon cover, but we hear that piece of music way too often. There is another piece of music that plays too often also. The music could be a lot worse though.
I think the voice acting in this game more than makes up for the music though. The acting is pretty good. I’m not a huge fan of the story or the cursing in this game, but the actors do a good job of it all. The sound effects in this game are very good also!
Bayonetta may not be my first game on the Switch, but it is a great game and action fans should definitely play it.
Bayonetta is a great game. I didn’t care for the game’s story but I know that there will be people out there who love it. The gameplay and graphics in this game are solid. Bayonetta looks wonderful on the Nintendo Switch. Its very cool to have game like this that you can play on both the TV and in portable mode. I think Bayonetta, more than anything else, really shows that any type of game can be brought to the Nintendo Switch. Adult fans of third person action games should not miss this title!
Thanks to Nintendo for providing a review copy of this game. Bayonetta is currently available on the Nintendo eShop! So is Bayonetta 2!
