Fantasy Life (Back) on Nintendo Switch

In a move that perhaps did surprise me, although perhaps it didn’t, Fantasy Life is once again coming to the Nintendo Switch. I say once again because there was a fair amount of drama around the title when Level-5 released the final release trailer.

Editor Note – in their last gameplay trailer about a month ago, Level-5 did indicate it was coming to “All Platforms” and showed a bit of Nintendo Switch gameplay. However, many including myself missed that trailer completely, so … ya no excuse, my thoughts below still!

In their Twitter post when the release date trailer was released, Level-5 indicated the game was coming to every console EXCEPT the Nintendo Switch, which led a lot of people to begin asking, “Where is the Nintendo Switch version” in the comments. This is a bit of a shock because when the game was first announced, they made a big deal about the fact that the game was coming to other consoles, and not JUST the Nintendo Switch.

At first I thought that perhaps it was an oversight, but as the preorder pages launched for PlayStation and Xbox, no such preorder page launched on the Nintendo Switch. Speculation began to swirl that perhaps the game was no longer coming to the Nintendo Switch, and was instead coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. Since that console was not out, nor had a release date been announced, it would have been inappropriate for Level-5 to say, “Coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.”

Fast forward to today’s Nintendo Direct where Fantasy Life was indeed confirmed as coming to the Nintendo Switch on May 21 as it was shown off in a video montage highlighting upcoming games. I, for one, am baffled by what is actually going on here. Was it that Level-5 thought the Nintendo Switch 2 was launching prior to the release date of Fantasy Life and so they wanted to be cautious? Was it that Level-5 wasn’t sure if they wanted to support two Nintendo consoles with their title?

Whatever the case may be, the month of uncertainty for Nintendo Switch fans seems to be over. Fantasy Life is the perfect title for Nintendo’s hybrid console, so it’s good to see confirmation of it landing today. I’m still baffled by this entire situation, but at least we have a little bit of clarification, right?

Now to see if there is a preorder option on the Nintendo Switch…(there isn’t – 11:32 AM ET)
