Spintires: Mudrunner-American Wilds Edition

I’m a horrible driver, in real life and in video games. So I knew going into Spintires: Mudrunner-American Wilds Edition for the Nintendo Switch that I wouldn’t be too good at it. Still, I thought it might be a fun game. Well, at least I was right about one thing.

Spintires: Mudrunner-American Wilds Edition isn’t a horrible game but it does feel like a throwback, a game we might have seen on the PS2 or the early PS3. Maybe even a cheap third party Wii game. Graphics wise, the trucks do look realistic and the surroundings are detailed but feel hollow. The world should have cars going by once and awhile and/or people in the towns. It has none of that. Spintires world is empty and uninteresting.

As for the gameplay, its hard to tell if I’m just a really horrible driver or the controls are bad or possibly its both. I had a really hard time controlling the trucks in this game. The controls are definitely not easy. There are a lot of extra menus hanging around for this driving sim game too. Plus, the point of the game is just to deliver stuff, unlock new trucks, and areas and thats it. The game doesn’t give you too much direction either, so its easy to get lost.

There is an online mode where you can play with others but I never got to try it out. I never found anyone online playing the game. I wonder if you can only play this game with friends or what. Maybe just nobody plays this game. I didn’t get to try out the local multiplayer either. Both are available though if you can find anyone to play the game with.

Spintires isn’t the worst Nintendo Switch game I’ve played. Like I said, the look of the trucks and surroundings are not bad. I suppose if you really love driving sims, you may find something to like here. Overall, I found the game to be hollow and uninteresting. I kept getting lost in the Wilds and never did much of anything in the game expect drive around. Hopefully someone will come up with a better driving sim in the future.
