PlayStation 4 hits 2 Million+ Sales Worldwide

Sony have this morning announced that their PlayStation 4 console, launched this past weekend in Europe, has sold 2.1 million units worldwide. That’s a record breaker, folks, and it still hasn’t released everywhere.

For those that care about this sort of thing, it’s a huge relief. The PlayStation 4 was always going to do well, but Sony have outdone themselves. Consoles, especially when finances are tough and launch line-ups are average, don’t sell millions of units in a matter of weeks. They burn brightly over time. This says a huge amount about where the PlayStation brand will be going over the next few years.

From Andrew Houser, via the PlayStation Blog:

It’s an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn’t have done it without you. I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence. The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible line-up of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.

So now that Sony have the following their new console deserves, perhaps it’s time to announce what they’re going to be doing with it. A few big reveals at the VGAs would suit nicely, no doubt, and would prove without a doubt that the two million people who invested this early were justified in their purchase.
