First Glimpse of Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor was revealed a few weeks ago for next-gen systems, current-gen systems and PC, and while it sounded pretty damn impressive, there was little to actually judge it by. Other than a few interesting gameplay features that might end up being less impressive than they sound, there wasn’t even really a picture. That changed earlier this week when a handful of screens were released, showing off both the player character, his techniques and a handful of enemies.

I don’t want to say it looks bland – it doesn’t, they’ve managed to capture the look of the films very well – but there’s certainly quite a generic feel to the screens. War in the North was supposed to offer all sorts of amazing features, and instead ended up being a pretty standard hack ‘n’ slash with a little RPG on the side. It was relatively underwhelming as a result, and it’s easy to worry that Shadow of Mordor could go the same way.

The important thing is that it’s fun, and with that amount of enemies on screen and the Tolkien-turns-in-his-grave Wraith magic on board, it could definitely be something to check out when it releases. Watch out for more information in 2014.
