Defiance Goes (Kind of) Free-to-Play

gaming-defiance-4_688x430

Hit console-style shooter MMO Defiance has gone kind of free-to-play. Although there’s still a limit on what you can do while you’re in the free-to-play version of the game, you can play for as long as you want without having to stop.

The only barrier between you and the full game seems to be that you’ll be unable to get more than a 500 EGO rating. EGO ratings are basically levels in the game, and unlocking them helps you gain new skills and weapons. The max EGO rating at launch was 5000, but it’s safe to say that if you play the “endless trial” for long enough that you get to the 500 rating, you could probably justify dropping the cash on the full game when it’s reduced in the Steam winter sale.

It says something about the state of subscription-based or upfront-cost MMOs that Defiance is already getting closer to the full on free-to-play mark, and it’s something that the developers behind The Elder Scrolls Online ought to consider.

Getting into the endless trial is easy: head over to the official website, create an account and hit download. You even get access to some of the features from the new DLC pack, Arkbreaker.
