Battle Princess Madelyn
Once upon a time…there are a princess named Madelyn. She was a Battle Princess. Madelyn was a princess who went on adventures, slayed enemies, and explored tombs and other places. No one had to rescue her! If you want to know more about Battle Princess Madelyn for the Nintendo Switch, than please read on for my review of the game.
If you liked the movie the Princess Bride, then you’ll smile when you see the opening for Battle Princess Madelyn. Other than that, the game has nothing in common with that movie. Madelyn is not Buttercup.
There are no men that seek to save or marry Madelyn. Instead, this princess travels throughout her land, encountering people to help and things to do, like defeat giant enemies. Its a neat story and I enjoyed the game’s dialogue too. However, Battle Princess’ biggest focus is its gameplay.
Do you remember Ghouls ‘N Ghosts for the NES? It was a very hard action-platformer where you attacked creatures and tried to make your way through the levels. The reason I mention that game is because Battle Princess Madelyn plays a lot like Ghouls ‘N Ghosts. The main character in Battle Princess even loses some of her armor when she gets hurt! Battle Princess Madelyn does have its own unique flavor too.
There are towns in Battles Princess Madelyn and there are also some subquests. The story mode of Battle Princess Madelyn is pretty hard, like Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, but it is also really fun. There is a lively world to be found in this game.
Another mode, Arcade mode, is even more like Ghouls ‘N Ghosts. This mode does away with the story (for the most part) and subquests. Instead, it keeps track of your score and focuses more on the gameplay. Both modes are hard and fun.
The controls for Battle Princess Madelyn are very tight. It is one of those games thats easy to learn, hard to master. Battle Princess doesn’t take advantage of any of the Switch’s special features like motion or touch controls. I think touch screen or motion controls for attacking might have been neat, of course it could’ve been too gimmicky. As it though, Battle Princess Madelyn is a really fun game. It looks fantastic on the TV and in handheld mode too!
Battle Princess Madelyn is a beautiful game. The graphics are stunning, with each area and each character that you run into looking like they came out of a cartoon. The developer did such a wonderful job with this game’s graphics. It is definitely one of the best looking games on the Nintendo Switch.
The music and sound effects in Battle Princess Madelyn are really good. Although I wish the game had voice acting. The beginning of the game, with its Princess Bride like opening, would have been even better with voices.
Battle Princess Madelyn takes the best of Ghosts ‘N Ghouls and adds Princess Bride and some elements of Castlevania with other action platformers to create a wonderful experiance. If you don’t mind a challenge, then you should absolutely check out Battle Princess Madelyn. The game looks and plays great on Nintendo Switch.
Battle Princess Madelyn gets a 9.5 out of 10!
