Media Servers Not Supported on PlayStation 4
While perhaps not as annoying as the news that PlayStation 4 users won’t be able to play MP3s, the fact that media servers will no longer be supported is going to be far more annoying (albeit to a smaller group of people). Watching a film or listening to music stored on your PC but played via your console was a great feature on PS3, and one that would have come in handy going forward.
Media servers are often very easy to set up, and beat having to set up an external hard drive. Using the internet, you can easily stream your content to other device without needing external devices or wiring. It’s as simple as hitting a few buttons.
Sony have today announced that media server support will not be present in the PS4. Although they don’t out and out say it, they would probably recommend you use their video rental/streaming services instead. There are probably also issues with licencing, and perhaps even pressure from anti-piracy groups. Best bet is on them pushing their own video services though.
It’s always possible that these features could be implemented a little down the line, although that largely depends on how successful the Unlimited services are.
