Magic: The Gathering – Tactics Closing Down
Magic: The Gathering – Tactics – the online strategy card game first released in 2011 – will close down in March next year. New accounts can no longer be made, and there will be no new sets of cards after November.
No reason was given for the shut down.
Magic: The Gathering – Tactics was first announced in 2009. It took almost a year and a half to see full release, becoming available to play in January 2011. A Steam version was released a little over a year later. A PlayStation 3 version was planned, although it doesn’t ever seem to have materialized.
Along with the announcement that the game would be closed to new players from today, and that old players have less than six months to enjoy the last of their Magic sets, SOE released an FAQ with pretty specific information. Most interested was the question as to whether a fan could run an emulator server:
Sony Online Entertainment will retain all of the code and data from Magic: The Gathering – Tactics. Sony Online Entertainment will not license or authorize the operation of a Magic: The Gathering – Tactics emulator or fan operated Magic: The Gathering – Tactics server.
