Final Fantasy VII Remake… Could Come to iOS

A Final Fantasy VII remake is something fans have wanted since at least the beginning of last generation, when Square Enix showed off a tech demo in which they recreated the opening movie from VII in PS3-quality graphics. It turned out to be nothing but a tease. That doesn’t mean that a remake won’t ever happen though, although it may not be quite what fans had expected.

Square Enix announced this morning that Final Fantasy VI would be hitting mobile devices later this year, and that after that they’d work on porting The After Years. In an interview with Kotaku, director Takashi Tokita told them where their focus will lie after they’ve completed their current projects.

The Legacy series won’t necessarily end with VI, Tokita said, when we asked him if it could include VII, VIII, IX, X and beyond. “We are aware that we have tons of VII fans,” he noted. “We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII.”

It’s possible that he means another game for the anthology – an English release of the Japan-exclusive Before Crisis would be excellent – or it might mean a straight port of Final Fantasy VII. It might not be all that difficult, if they could somehow play the PC version through an emulator. The biggest barrier would be its size. I can’t say for certain what limits there are on iOS releases, but I can’t imagine there are many titles that take up a fifth of the most common internal memory size either.

Either way, with the PlayStation 4 a mere six weeks from release, I can imagine there are a lot of fans suddenly hoping Square have a change of mind.
