I’ve wanted to launch a YouTube video for a long time now, but have always been a bit weary of getting into it because of the high costs, and perceived associated costs with getting everything you need to get started. It’s daunting, and pulling the trigger on the necessary equipment can be costly, and time consuming as you research the different options available to you. Thanks to our good friends at AVerMedia, we were setup with the AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra 4K capture device to begin creating videos on our YouTube channel, and even without secondary equipment, we have had a successful early run with a fantastic little device. How does it work? Let’s dive in!

The device itself is fairly light way and pretty small; while some companies push their internal devices for PC towers, AVerMedia has also launched an external model that works much better when hooked up to video game consoles. And hooking up this device to my Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X, and PS4 could not be easier. An HDMI cable runs from the back of the console into the HDMI IN port on the device, and a secondary HDMI cable runs from the HDMI OUT port to the television. A third micro USB cord runs from the other side of the device into your laptop or PC, not only providing the power to run the device, but also as the key link for your captures.

Once you’ve got the capture device all setup, you’ll be directed to the AVerMedia website to download the associated Windows application, RECentral, where all your recording will take place. RECentral allows you to do single camera capture – just the gameplay for example – or multi camera capture, which allows you to overlay a secondary video on top of your capture.

RECentral also offers a fair amount of audio customization as well, allowing you to tweak how your audio sounds, as well as raise or lower game audio or chat audio levels to reach the desired ecosystem you want you recordings to publish at. For a free program alongside the device, it’s actually fully featured and works incredibly well.

But ultimately, the biggest bonus to using the AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra is the plug and play ability of the device. I’ve never captured video game content before, and never had a capture card before. It took me less than 30 minutes to feel comfortable with the software and hardware, which is pretty impressive as I’m not always the greatest with new tech. It’s all so easy. Click to record, click to stop, and one click to upload to a linked YouTube channel. It’s seamless, and amazing.

We’ve done a ton of recording with the device, all of which can be found on our YouTube channel, The First 30! We’ve even used the device to upload a few videos for Abdallah Smash, famous Nintendo YouTuber out of the United States. The quality from this project matched his own quality, and ultimately he was pleased with the final results! You can check out one of those videos below:

If you are looking to get into the capture card game, then this product is definitely right for you. The ease of use will quickly eliminate any anxiety you might have about beginning to capture content, and for a few hundred dollars you could be well on your way to producing great content for YouTube.
