Vita TV Announced
Sony have today announced Vita TV, a device that does everything the Vita does, without the portability. By plugging the device into your TV, you can play the latest Vita titles like you would any other game. Available for $99 and compatible with every feature of the Vita, Vita TV is a cheaper option for those that don’t necessarily want the Vita device, but want to play the games available for the system.
The Vita TV comes with a slot for Vita games, a slot for a memory card and not much else. The box itself is tiny, far smaller than the PS3 and PS4.
If playing Vita games isn’t your thing, you’ll be happy to learn that Vita TV comes equipped with remote play functionality and the ability to use streaming channels, Vita TV is a great option for people that want to play their PS4 anywhere in their house without the need to move hardware.
Vita TV uses Dualshock 3 for its controls, and will patch in support for the Dualshock 4 later in the year.
Fans of the handheld seem worried that this might cannibalize sales, and see it almost as a sign that Sony are dropping support for the Vita, that they’re literally seeing it as another means of playing PS4. Even so, Vita TV is going to be a great option for a lot of people, and it harkens back to the days of Nintendo portable game players for SNES and N64.
