Sonic Spin-offs a Possibility, if the Game Fit
Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a little long in the tooth now. Although Generations showed him at his best, and there are definitely a lot of people excited for Lost Worlds, there’s also some interest in where the series might go next. Might we see some of the large (and ever increasing) roster of minor characters take the centre spot-light, not unlike Luigi in this year’s Super Luigi U?
The answer is maybe, although it won’t be the characters that push the game, it’ll be the game that suits the characters.
Interviewed by ONM (and caught by joclo at Nintendo Everything), Takashi Iizuka was asked if Big the Cat may ever see his own game.
That’s a nice idea! At Summer of Sonic a lot of people were asking if we might feature characters like Shadow, or if there was any possibility of spin-offs. The focus isn’t on taking characters and building around them, but on the game itself. Obviously, if there was a game in which we could use the characters in the best way, we might consider it. For Big the Cat, if it’s a fishing game, it’s a possibility.
The Jon St Jon voiced Big the Cat was something of an anomaly when Sonic Adventure was originally released for the Dreamcast, a character that was cute for kids at the time but which did little to help the game and was hardly very memorable. And we only have to remember Shadow the Hedgehog and Tails Adventure to see why a spin-off could be very easy to get wrong. Regardless, any new entries in the Sonic series – so long as they’re as strong as generations – will definitely be one worth checking out.
