Gamestop Manager Makes Fun of Customer at GTA V Launch, Anger Ensues…
A video has been released of what can only be described as an “incident” at a Gamestop Grand Theft Auto midnight launch. In it, a customer tries to claim his copy of Grand Theft Auto with a business card instead of a picture ID, acts rather badly and holds up the line while boosting up the drama. It’s the reaction of the manager, however, that makes the video noteworthy and, love her or hate her, you’re bound to have a reaction.
It may have just been a throwaway joke to lighten the mood for other customers who had been angrily waiting, but it’s blown up into something so much bigger. As he walked away, the gamestop manager shouted “We all have his business card. Who wants to email him, thank him for holding up the line?”
The customer took it as an actual threat and, perhaps because he’d already been humiliated by the thought that he could use a business card as a form of ID, decided to take it seriously. He got behind the counter and started demanding her name and phone number. She provided it, but he was unhappy that he couldn’t get her last name. It’s important to note that most retailers want you only to provide a first name and a corporate telephone number, to prevent potential victimisation outside of the store.
In the end, he leaves, the crowd laughing at him as he goes. Reaction on the net has gone another way, however, with some calling for the manager to be fired for her outburst. A YouTube comment seems to imply that the manager has since been fired, we’ve contacted Gamestop for clarification.
Strictly speaking, neither side was in the right. People that work in retail are, first and foremost, people, and they will make mistakes, but it’s not right to dig the knife in more than it had to have been (he thought a business card was ID). It doesn’t help that she was obviously a little tired of dealing with this guy even before he got this game. The customer was angry about not being able to use his business card – take a look at that snatch in the first 30 seconds – and cherished the idea of getting back at the manager a little too much. The video doesn’t really do justice to exactly how annoying this customer seems to have been; the reaction of the crowd and staff should tell you everything.
