Disney Infinity 3.0 Toys Top of the Class, Almost
Toys-to-life games often take more time to fully review. Generally, content is almost always open ended – leaving reviewers wondering where to stop – and as a result, there is a lot to look at and experience. There is one thing, however, that is often overlooked in reviews when it comes to Disney Infinity, Skylanders, and amiibo: the look of the figures. Disney Infinity 3.0 provides the best character models yet in the Disney Infinity franchise, topping the look of Skylanders figures but falling just short – although arguably on par – of Nintendo’s amiibos.
The average Disney Infinity character in Canada will run you 13.99, roughly the same price as regular Skylanders – remember, Trap Masters are larger and cost 17.99 – and just a few dollars less then the average amiibo. If you factor in availability and the cost of importing an amiibo, Disney Infinity 3.0 characters might be the best figures for your dollars. As of right now, I own a variety of figures including Anakin, Yoda, Solo, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and all the characters from Inside Out. Each character model looks outstanding. Obviously, the star wars characters have a bit more detail than the Inside Out characters, but when comparing each you must remember the source material. It is no surprise that the Star Wars characters have more detail as these characters have equipment and weapons not present on, say, Joy or Anger.
That isn’t to say that ‘plain’ characters in the franchise don’t have appeal. All of Inside Out, as well as Mickey and Minnie, both look excellent, to a point where in a few years when my son has moved on from Disney Infinity, I would have no problem displaying them on a shelf. Unlike Skylanders – and very much like amiibo – Disney Infinity characters really do have a collectible value to them, on top of their uses within the games.
The recreation of these characters within your game is the best yet from Disney in their toys-to-life lineup, although it has been done fairly well in the previous two titles. I hope you don’t feel that Disney Infinity 3.0 toys blow away every toy from previous generations. That really isn’t the case. However, when you take the current collection of Disney Infinity 3.0 characters and compare them to 1.0 and 2.0, I personally feel that the average quality is higher with Disney’s latest release.
