Sony apologizes for GTAV leak
A few days ago, we reported that a group of hackers was attempting to hack the GTAV pre-load that Sony added to the PSN Store last Thursday. Eventually, they did in fact succeed in their endeavor and proceeded to release spoilers across the internet. Everything from the in-game music to achievements icons and even how the story ends were posted at various locations online for all to see.
Sony have released a statement publically apologizing to fans and, most importantly, to Rockstar themselves for the security breach.
Nick Caplin – Head of Communications at SCEE had this to say on the matter on the PS blog:
Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets. These assets were posted online. We have since removed the digital pre-order file from the PlayStation Store in Europe. We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content. GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we’re looking forward to a historic launch on 17th September.
While I’m sure this will all be forgotten about once the game is released on September 17th, it doesn’t bode well for the future of pre-loading games. In fact, the ability to pre-load games is one of the best features the PS4 is capable of. Will this breach cause Sony to rethink how they handle the process? Only time will tell.
