More Thoughts From Me #182: Checking Out DC Universe Online For Switch
I played DC Universe Online on the Playstation 3. I thought the game was alright. Flashforward to now! DC Universe Online is released for the Nintendo Switch. I decide that I want to try the game again. Will I like it better? Will I become addicted to the game? Let’s talk about DC Universe Online for the Nintendo Switch!
My DC Universe Online character’s name is Doctor Weirdo because Doctor Fate and Doctor Strange are already taken. And I think having a silly DC character is kind of cool.
I also had to have a speedster! I am a huge fan of The Flash. Maybe not as crazy about the character as I am about Spider-man but almost there. So a Speedster was a must for DC Universe Online. I loved teaming up with The Flash early on in this game.
And teaming up with Superman and seeing iconic Metropolis and Gotham is pretty cool. I especially loved running up buildings and then jumping off them. The exploration is this game is pretty neat.
However, the missions that I have played so far are pretty much the same: beat up bad guys, beat up confused good guys, destroy stuff, rinse and repeat. Maybe there is some mission variety later on but right now, I’m unimpressed by the missions.
I do like Doctor Weirdo but I still wish I could actually play as The Flash or Superman or Green Arrow or Batman. Its too bad you have to create your own generic superhero to play in the DC Universe. I understand why. There would just be too many people wanting to play as Batman or Superman or whoever. So creating your own superhero makes sense and its kind of fun…
DC Universe Online isn’t a great game though. Its graphics are not bad but definitely last generation and that shows in some places. There can be a bit slowdown in some online matches too. I think that when a game’s best feature is exploring massive cities and not really doing much, well, thats a problem. Sure there are a lot of missions to do but not enough variety, at least not yet. I also kept seeing some cool stuff hidden behind paywalls too.
What’s the biggest problem with DC Universe Online though? That is, without a doubt, the download size of the game. It is 24 GB to download DC Universe Online. If you have a lot of space on your SD card, thats not a bad thing. If you’re like me and you are running out of room, well, keeping DC Universe on your system for good just isn’t possible. I’m not enjoying the game enough for it to be taking up that much space.
So after I finish writing this column, I am moving out of the DC Universe. My bags will be packed. I’m deleting the game from my SD Card. I will keep my save, for now anyway. But DC Universe is no Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Man, it would be awesome to play a DC Comics based game like that on the Switch!
Still, I can imagine that some people will really love DC Universe Online. I hope those players have fun.
What do you think about DC Universe Online on the Nintendo Switch? Are you addicted to it?
Next week: Nintendo Switch Online disappointment. The NES games lately have sucked, the free trial thing is a nice idea but its starting with Mario Tennis…and some games, like Super Mario Maker 2, do not have great one multiplayer. Is this service really worth the money?
