Free DLC Should be the Norm says Witcher 3 Developer
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt really shocked the video game world when it announced 16 free DLC packs, ranging from cosmetic upgrades to extra missions, weapons, and items. But it was all free. Free if you purchased the game digitally. Free if you purchased the standard edition, and free if you purchased the deluxe edition. It was free even if you didn’t preorder the game, and it was free if you bought the game used.
While CD Projekt Red plans on releasing some paid DLC – lets face it, when a game is added to significantly with hours of extra game play, we should expect a charge – they have really pushed for companies to end the practice of charging for cosmetic or minor DLC packs.
From CD Projekt Red,
I’d like to extend my thanks to all the gamers who played our game and gave these DLCs a try. Nothing makes a developer happier than seeing gamers have fun with what they created.
I would really like to see such initiatives become an industry standard rather than an exception to the general rule, and I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a good example.
New DLC is set to come from the developers which will add over 30 hours of new game play. They also promised it would be available at a very reasonable price.
