The Last of Us Part 1 Remake to bring a bunch of Gameplay and Visual Enhancements

One of my favorite games of all time is getting the “remake” treatment. The Last of Us had a profound impact on me as a gamer as well as being a father, it was the first game to actually make me shed a tear for what I was experiencing and for that I will never forget it, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. With that being said, we are eagerly awaiting the next gen treatment for this game classic and Naughty Dog has highlighted some of the things we can expect.

How Naughty Dog rebuilt The Last of Us Part I

  • The entire game has been rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of a new generation of graphical capability, allowing this game to reach the visual fidelity that the studio aspired for. Which obviously is expected with the enhanced hardware they are using.

  • The PlayStation 5’s powerful hardware drives a host of visual benefits, from denser physics with tons of bumpables and chipables and cinematics now transitioning seamlessly to gameplay.  This will likely result in a more immersive experience for the players.

  • Motion matching technology means that character animations flow more convincingly, intuitively and realistically.

  • AI upgrades mean that characters inhabit the world in a more authentic and realistic way, such as buddy characters navigating cover to avoid enemy NPC sightlines more authentically. This was one of my nitpicks from the original so good to see that addressed here.

  • Integrate some fan requests, including a “permadeath” mode, a speedrun-focused mode, and a host of brand-new unlockable costumes for Joel and Ellie. You know, permadeath, for the psychos… lol.

  • The game also hosts 60-plus accessibility options, outpacing what the developer was able to offer with The Last of Us Part II, and includes a new Audio Description mode, ensuring that play is rewarding and inclusive for all. This is great to see, it’s always a welcomed addition when more people can experience this work of art.

Other upgrades they outlined included taking advantage of the dual sense and utilizing haptics and of course their 3D audio (with capable hardware) to give you that full immersion experience. On the performance side you can expect native 4K at targeted 30 FPS or dynamic 4K at targeted 60 FPS. They also released a video highlighting the process and improvements you can check out below:

blank Kevin Austin has been in gaming journalism in one way or another since the launch of the Nintendo Gamecube. Married and father of 3 children he has been gaming since the ripe age of 6 when he got his first NES system and over 30 years later he is still gaming almost daily. Kevin is also co-founder of the Play Some Video Games (PSVG) Podcast network which was founded over five years ago and is still going strong. Some of his favorite gaming series includes Fallout and Far Cry, he is a sucker for single player adventure games (hence his big reviews for Playstation), and can frequently be found getting down in one battle royale or another. If it's an oddball game, odds are he's all about it.
