Final Fantasy VII Available on Steam

Final Fantasy VII Steam

It’s been a long time coming, but Final Fantasy VII has finally made it to Steam. The RPG classic has been in the Steam database for years, but an exclusive release through Square’s own store seemingly put an end to the idea that it would ever make it to the most popular digital distribution network.

Final Fantasy VII costs £9.99 on Steam, and comes with everything that the Square-exclusive version had. That means achievements, cloud saves and the ability to increase the amount of gold and experience you have from the game itself.

Square have used the original PC version of the game as the foundation for this update, so little else has changed. If you were a PlayStation gamer back in the day, you’ll notice some of the music has been changed (and not for the better). You can change this back, unofficially, by swapping out some of the base files. Although it may be more difficult to install the old mods onto the Steam version of Final Fantasy VII, I’ve yet to see anybody say they’ve had any problems with it. Just remember to turn off automatic update.

It’s also worth noting that Final Fantasy VII is almost always-online. You can play it offline, but there have been reports of offline saves being deleted if you play online. Going back offline means you then don’t have a copy of your save. This is an odd problem and one that Square may just fix.

Final Fantasy VII won’t be the only classic Square RPG coming to Steam either. Final Fantasy VIII has been in the Steam database for quite some time, and even has achievements linked to it. I imagine it’ll go for £9.99 as well.
