Portable gaming system Wikipad releasing next week
June 11th will mark the release of the Wikipad in America, a portable gaming system specially designed for playing Android type games. At present this is a US only release date and no word yet on when we can expect the system in Europe.
The Wikipad boasts a 7″ LCD screen that fits snuggly inside a U-shaped controller. The controller – bundled with the package- includes 4 face buttons, directional analogue buttons, 2 thumb sticks and 2 bumper and trigger buttons. In other words it’s a console controller with built-in speakers and a removable screen that can then be used as an everyday tablet.
Specs
Hardware specs appear to be similar to that of the Nexus 7 at first glance with an NVidia Tegra 3 processor with quad-core CPU and 5th battery-saver core with a high-performance 12-core NVIDIA GPU, 1200×800 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera (meh, good enough for Skype I guess but not a lot else). The biggest concern is the outdated NVidia Tegra 3 processor. Tegra 4 processors are what most new devices have these days.
The system also includes the ever so useful micro-SD slot and micro-HDMI output.
Games
Just like any new system its potential rests solely on its launch line up of games. Out of the box the Wikipad comes included with Dead Trigger, Hockey Nations Tournament and ShadowGun: Dead Zone.
Its biggest selling point though will be that it’s optimized to play every Android title currently on the market and the addition of the thumb sticks makes games such as Grand Theft Auto, Metal Slug, Sonic The Hedgehog, Asphalt Heat 7, a joy to play.
Wikipad have also teamed up with Playstation Mobile to bring you some of the best games Sony has to offer to the mobile market.
The Wikipad will release on June 11th in America. It’ll be available for $249 from BestBuy, TigerDirect and Walmart. A European release date has yet to be announced.
