Nintendo Announce Gamecube Controller Support for Wii U

As we head into E3, Nintendo continues to do little announcements, this time via twitter.  Nintendo of America tweeted out a picture of a GameCube controller adapter for the Wii U, and announced that GameCube controllers would be useable when playing Super Smash Bros.  This is great news, as the GameCube controller might be one of the best controllers Nintendo ever released.

The image also depicted a controller with a Super Smash Bros. logo on it.  This leads me to believe one of two things.  Either Nintendo plans on re-releasing GameCube controllers, or they will be offering a special edition of the game with a controller packed it.  Either way, it will be interesting to see how much this adapter is going to cost, and how quickly the price of used GameCube controllers goes up, assuming Nintendo decides not to begin releasing the controller again.

My bet is that Nintendo does not begin selling controllers again.  If they had plans to sell a GameCube controller, it would make more sense financially to just create a controller that could be connected to a WiiMote, while also allowing players to forgo what may be a costly adapter.

As of today, only Super Smash Bros. has confirmed support for the adapter and controllers, but hopefully this will extend to other titles as well.  GamesReviews Mat Growcott suggested that E3 predictions of more GameCube games may not be that far off with the announcement of this adapter.

I suggest players began crawling through their attics or perusing online sites in hopes of securing as many good quality controllers as they can; soon, controllers in near perfect condition may go for a premium.
