More information released on Legend of Zelda Wii U

LegendofZelda

We knew there was going to be a new Legend of Zelda on its way for Wii U – Nintendo had confirmed it even if you didn’t like to presume – and after today’s Nintendo Direct… we know there’s a new Legend of Zelda on its way for Wii U. While the developers didn’t go as far as to reveal anything tangible about the next game in the Zelda series (not even a name), they did hint at what might come: giant spider death robots.

While The Legend of Zelda has always existed as a kind of historical fantasy, the next game looks set to blur those lines even more. While Link was shown riding through a beautiful landscape on horseback, there was also a chase scene in which they’re attacked by something out of Titanfall. How will technology fit into the series? How will Hyrule be different with something like that roaming the planes? Where the hell is this going to fit on the timeline?!

If you want true open world, that’s what you’ll be getting. While all Zelda games have technically been open world, this will be the first one to actually let you explore properly. Gone are the specific entrances and exits that connect places. It’s not the big deal some will be bound to make of it, but it’s something that probably should have happened in Twilight Princess, and so it’s a welcome addition.

The graphics are lovely, although for Nintendo’s flagship adventure game, it seems a shame that they already look dated next to The Witcher 3, and even the likes of Skyrim. The cel-shading goes a long way towards giving it a timeless look, but that’s no longer the same as saying that it stands out.

While the trailer was interesting, it left more questions than answers. Other than the vague 2015 teaser at the end of the trailer, when will this next Legend of Zelda be available? When will we see more? Is Link a girl or a boy? While always androgynous, we’ve never been more confused over a characters gender (not without playing something like Samurai Warriors, anyway).

We’re going to need to wait to find out the answers to all those questions.
