Games For Windows Live… Not Dead?
Games for Windows Live wasn’t something most people liked, and those same individuals were only too happy to see it go the way of the dodo. PC Gamers have been talking about the service shutting down for quite some time, since a patch to Batman Arkham City effectively ditched its DRM. Microsoft have been pretty definite in what they’ve been saying as well… until now.
CheatCC have today run an article in which they’ve quoted a Microsoft rep who isn’t quite ready to let go:
We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.
So what does that mean? Honestly, it’s a little hard to tell. On the surface it says that they’re just closing down their old gaming store, not surprising considering how many alternatives there are on Windows 8.1. On the other hand, investing in PC gaming and keeping their own client running? That’s another thing entirely.
This is one that we’re just going to have to watch.
