Ubisoft Didn’t Interfere in Child of Light Development
It’s a well believed idea that major publishers hate originality and that they’ll take a direct hand in development if they don’t like the direction a game is going. While that may well happen, Child of Light writer Jeffrey Yohalem was surprised to find Ubisoft was nothing but supportive of his fairy tale RPG.
From the writer’s AMA on Reddit:
I actually never had to deflect anything. Ubisoft believed in our vision of a game created directly by the dev team and stuck to it. I was really surprised actually, I expected some interference. The same was true for the rest of the dev team.
Remember that Child of Light is an RPG-Platformer hybrid in which absolutely everything rhymes. It’s about as far from a game from a major studio as you can expect, so to hear that the publisher behind Assassin’s Creed and Rayman didn’t feel the need to stick their collective noses into the storytelling or gameplay is quite impressive. More interesting is the presumption that the lower risk from digital releases (and the already experienced developers behind it) might mean future games of this type, built between major AAA titles and released at a much lower price.
If they’re anything like Child of Light, we can’t wait.
