NFC Figures and Smash Bros not a Guarantee
I wrote a previous article on GamesReviews about Nintendo diving into collectible, playable toys market. A day after the article was posted, it was announced that these toys would be usable across a variety of Nintendo games and not be tied to one specific game franchise like the toys used in Disney Infinity or Skylanders. One such rumor was that the NFC figures, scanned using the NFC reader on the Wii U gamepad, would be used in Super Smash Bros.
Initially, the internet was in an uproar over this rumor. After all, with the legacy behind a franchise such as this, the last thing people wanted was the need to buy figures in order to have them playable in Super Smash Bros. It appears as if this is not going to be the case. Although they may have been upset that their plans had been leaked, Nintendo announced that there are no plans to put NFC figures into Super Smash Bros.
This comes as a relief, at least for me. Skylanders and Disney Infinity are two franchise that began using the collectible figures, and did so with their initial releases. For this reason, those who have enjoyed these titles understand, and are used to, purchasing toys to play the game. Smash Bros. has never had this type of system, and therefore, introducing one now does not seem to be in the best interest for Nintendo.
How these figures will be used is still up in the air, but I would expect details to emerge during E3.
