The Joys of LEGO and Video Games
Last week, Warner Bros. PR in Toronto reached out and let me know they had a number of Ninjago, LEGO Dimensions fun packs and character packs to send my way. They arrived yesterday, and my six year old son Logan lost his mind. Not only is Logan a big Ninjago fan, but he is also a big LEGO Dimensions fan. His excitement made me realize something: all of these toys-to-life games do a great job of mixing toys and video games, but none of them – Skylanders or Disney Infinity – can do it like LEGO.
Our basement is Logan’s LEGO haven. There are blocks every way you look. Multiple sets line the shelves on the wall, and ongoing creations can be found in every corner of the room. He loves LEGO. Building it, playing with it, and destroying it. That is why LEGO Dimensions quickly climbed to the top of his favorite games list: he can build the LEGO, destroy the LEGO, and mix and match it. While he always builds what he is told initially – through the onscreen instructions – he does eventually deconstruct what he is building and does something different. The item in the game might look the same, but the creation on the portal doesn’t.
Skylanders and Disney Infinity cannot hold a candle to LEGO Dimensions. While they have nice looking figures – which in my house, are decorations on a shelf – LEGO Dimensions packs can be played with. It’s different, and it is how it should be. Kudos to the entire team behind this great idea and game.
We will have more articles on the Ninjago packs in the near future, so stay tuned to GamesReviews.com!
