Ninjago Review – LEGO Dimensions
Last week, Warner Bros. PR in Toronto, Ontario, sent over a bunch of Ninjago play sets for LEGO Dimensions. Over the past few days, my six year old son Logan and I have been building the sets and exploring the Ninjago world. When it comes to this series, my son is the expert, so most of the thoughts and opinions are his. Lets break down what we received from Warner!
Editor Note: Basic information found via the LEGO Dimensions Wiki, available here.
If you’ve watched the Ninjago television show, than you will know that Nya is the “odd one out” when it comes to the main characters. While she is not a Ninja, she does posses some pretty dominant sword play. She is, for lack of a better description, a samurai. That being said, my son was very surprised that Nya can actually do spinjitzu, something she is not capable of in the show!
In game abilities:
Spinjitzu
Acrobatic
Stealth
Laser Deflector
Fix-It
Review of Nya Fun Pack:
Logan appreciated how different Nya is from the other Ninjago characters. Not being a Ninja makes Nya’s character a bit different to play with, even if she has the Spinjitzu capability. The main ‘vehicle’ is the Samurai Mech, a large mechanical samurai that Nya can climb in. One of its main features is a hand that doubles as a projectile. Logan was disappointed that the alternative builds for Nya’s vehicle are not incredibly different from the main option.
Sensei Wu is your typical old guy. He’s basically a wet blanket that really isn’t in to doing things the fun way! Instead, he wants to be calculated, careful, and strategic, the exact opposite of what the other Ninja want to do. There is no better time, then, to change who Sensei Wu is. Afterall, in LEGO Dimensions, you get to dictate the story!
In game abilities:
Spinjitzu
Stealth
Pole Vault
Acrobat
Glide
Review of Sensei Wu Fun Pack:
Logan wasn’t that excited to dive into Sensei Wu, but when it was the only pack left unopened, his curiosity got the better of him. Overall, he was happy with Wu although he often would associate the character in LEGO Dimensions with the show. He dislikes Wu in the show, so for the most part, he disliked Wu in the game. However, Wu offers a different set of skills than the other Ninjas that makes him important to have, especially when crossing the world of Ninajago. Without Wu, many secrets here would go unnoticed. Of all the physical builds and in game vehicles, Logan did like the Flying White Dragon the best. Unfortunately, like so many of the other vehicles, the alternate builds were not that different when it came to their handling in game, although the dragon does get mixed up a bit with different elements, which makes it a bit more interesting than the others to experiment with.
This was the first set opened, and it was quick. I’m pretty sure that between the shipping depot and home, Jay was already put together and on his base. Jay is a very interesting character in the television show because of his unique weapon – the others use melee weapons, primarily where as Jay gets a bit of range with his own!
In game abilities:
Electricity(Lightning Powers )
Spinjitzu
Fix-It
Stealth
Acrobatics
Review of Jay Fun Pack:
The big disappointment in this pack for Logan was the vehicle. It made it on the base once or twice, but from what I’ve viewed from the couch, he hasn’t touched it since. Jay, on the other hand, is a portal main stay. It has never left, more than likely because of his great electricity special move. Logan absolutely loves using this, and it is one of the features that sets Jay apart from his other Ninja pals. The build on this set is rather dull in comparison to others – most notably Wu’s! – and the dull build extends to the use of the vehicle in game. Jay, however, is a top notch character to have when exploring any of the games many worlds, including Ninjago!
This pack ended up being Logan’s favorite, but that might be more because of the value in the pack. For a mere 8-10 dollars more, players get an extra Ninja and vehicle. That is pretty good if you are a big Ninjago fan!
In Game Abilities: Cole
Spinjitzu
Acrobatic
Stealth
Laser Deflector
Super Strength
Review of Team Pack: Cole
Cole, out of all the ninjas, is the defensive minded individual. Using his scythe, he is often found protecting the people around him. However, in a clearly offensive game, there is no such thing as defense. Cole does not get more hearts, nor is he any better at blocking other people. Unlike the other Ninjas, Cole has Super Strength which allows him to move objects other players in LEGO Dimensions cannot. For that reason, Logan loves him as he is one of the few characters that Logan owns with this ability. The vehicle build for Cole is very cool, much better than any of the other Ninjago characters. This makes this pack even more valuable for Ninajo, and LEGO, fans.
In Game Abilities: Kai
Spinjitzu
Acrobatic
Stealth
Laser Deflector
Review of Team Pack: Kai
This is by far Logan’s favorite characters, although only because of his fire abilities. However, unlike all of the other Ninjago characters, Kai does not have a special ability unique to him. His moves are all available by using other characters, so from my own standpoint as the the “completionist” in the family, this is incredibly disappointing. I really wish that Kai would have had a ability unique to the Ninjago world. The vehicle build for Kai, like Jay, is underwhelming and disappointing. Still, if you want a few Ninja’s at your disposal, this pack is definitely the most valuable one to pick up.
We have one more big team pack to review, and that will conclude the items that were sent over by Warner Bros. Once again, thank you to the PR team in Toronto, Ontario, who sent these over to us for review!
