Titanfall Won’t Have a Season Pass
If you’ve played an AAA game in the last twelve months, there’s a good chance you’ve come across the concept of the ‘Season Pass’. This gives you an entire collection of DLC at a reduced price, usually the cost of one DLC pack. It started, among other places, with Call of Duty, and Infinity Ward alumni Respawn were expected to continue the trend. They won’t be – Titanfall will not have a season pass.
This is a surprise announcement. Season passes tend to work for everybody – diehard fans get to pay one price up front and get everything as it comes out and at a cheaper price, while developers get more money earlier on, perhaps to help develop that DLC. There’s very little downside, other than for those who are generally opposed to DLC in the first place. As a completely online game, probably with a decent amount of DLC, Titanfall would have been an ideal place to stick a season pass.
But it’s not happening. From Twitter:

So what exactly does this mean? Titanfall will have DLC, that’s for sure, so perhaps they’re just hoping more people buy it each time. Titanfall is not likely to be a yearly franchise, and regular bursts of income will be helpful in the future. It’s probably as simple as that, although it does mean fans who would have otherwise partaken in the season pass will now have to pay a little more to get everything on offer.
