Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Limited to 30 FPS
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition might contain improved graphics, a new Lara and all the DLC, but there’s one area in which it certainly isn’t “definitive.” Scot Amos of Crystal Dynamics has today confirmed that the new-gen version of last year’s Tomb Raider reboot will be limited to 30 frames per second.
It’s important not to jump the gun here. Frame rate is a difficult thing to talk about, partly because of the many erroneous thoughts on each side. More frames a second isn’t always better, a stable frame rate has never ruined a game and, in fact, less is more for a certain type of title. Tomb Raider could be perfectly acceptable at 30 FPS and it might still rival the PC version.
The question isn’t so much whether it’ll ruin the experience, but rather why they didn’t try and get it to 60 FPS. Is it a hardware issue or did the developers just not spend enough time optimizing things? Could this be improved if more effort had been put into the patch or was it a specific move? These are questions that’ll never be answered, and perhaps it doesn’t really matter.
What does matter is that Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition looks great, and only those looking for a reason not to rebuy are likely to be put off by this announcement.
