Next-Gen Dark Soul II Not Ruled Out
Dark Souls II is gearing up to be a great game for core gamers, and hopefully it’ll manage to be just as tough as its predecessors. Here’s the problem: a lot of core gamers have moved onto next-gen consoles and would probably quite like the bulk of their hobby to happen from the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Dark Souls II is only coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. But hope is not yet lost.
Whilst speaking in an interview with EDGE, Yui Tanimura, when asked whether a next-gen port was on the cards, confirmed that no decision had been made.
We have not put any thought into this yet, so I unfortunately can’t answer at this point.
It’s an interesting response, and one that might even result in a few cancelled pre-orders. Of course, there’s always the chance that they’re already working on the next-gen version and are just being terribly vague so they don’t pull an Assassin’s Creed and lose half of their day one sales (just like Rockstar have been doing the last few months), but it seems a fairly genuine response.
More importantly, why did From Software choose to make Dark Souls II for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the first place. No, cynical reader, it wasn’t because of the 140+ million consoles sold, it was because the developers saw the potential to build on what they’d already do with Dark Souls.
At the start of development, we felt that there was still a lot of potential that remained unused in Dark Souls.
I hope this can be seen with the demos and footage that we have released. Our intention was to capitalise on the total potential of [seventh-generation] consoles and deliver the game to fans as soon as possible.
