DayZ Sold One Million in a Month
It might not be taking on the likes of Grand Theft Auto, but the standalone edition of DayZ is doing incredibly well. In only a single month it has managed to sell a million copies on Steam, something that’s incredibly impressive by almost any standard. It’s doing even better when you realize it’s currently part of Steam’s Early Access initiative and it’s not even properly released yet (or, rather, not in a fully stable state).
Dean Hall announced the news via his Twitter account earlier this week, and later expanded on his reaction for Polygon:
We’re just blown away with the success of it. We obviously knew that there was strong interest in the concept, but weren’t sure whether that interest was just ‘hype’ or whether it would actually translate into real sales. I remember when we finally pushed the button, I had this moment of panic when I wondered if many people would really buy it.
It’s true that there were some naysayers – largely people who had played the original mod – who thought DayZ was past its prime, and that the standalone version took too long to come out. The developers have proven that crowd wrong, and while DayZ still has a way to go before it’s fully finished, there’s a strong community waiting to back it while it grows.
