More Thoughts From Me #255: Scott? Scott Pilgrim?

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game is releasing this week and will appear on lots of platforms. I’ve talked about that elsewhere. Let’s talk about the movie!

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World started life as a comic book. I’ve only ever read a little bit of the comic. My experience with the story is via the movie and the game. Today I want talk about the movie. Its still video game related!

How is it video game related?

Well, if you’ve ever seen the Scott Pilgrim Vs the World movie, then you know. If you haven’t, let me just explain it a little.

The basic concept of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is that Scott Pilgrim wants to date Ramona Flowers. And there is just one thing standing in his way, well, seven actually. Scott has to fight all seven of Romona’s Evil Exes! Cue boss theme music!

Basically Scott Pilgrim is a video game. The movie has lots of video game references, video game-like fight scenes, sound effects, and more. Its a love letter to video games. I like this movie a lot.

The first time I ever saw Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, I enjoyed it. The second time, I watched it late at night with the sound off and didn’t care for it. Then I saw it again with the sound up. Scott Pilgrim is the type of movie where you need everything: the visuals and the sound effects/music work together to create a really fun movie.

Most of the characters, even some of the villains, are likable and the video game stuff does slow down occasionally to spotlight characters and try to get you to care about them. It succeeded for me.

Is it a bit corny at times? Sure. There’s that whole vegan plotline. And other things. But its also so much fun and if you go along for the ride, you’ll probably enjoy it.

So you understand now why Scott Pilgrim Vs World became a video game. Right from the comic to the movie, it was a video game in its concept. If it wasn’t actual video game too, that would’ve been a crime against nature.

If you’ve never seen the Scott Pilgrim Vs the World movie, go see it. I think you’ll like it. But even if you don’t, check out the video game. That game is fun whether you like the movie or not. Art wise, it takes more inspiration from the comic than it does the movie!

I’m glad that the game is coming back. Hopefully the movie will get watched again too. And one of these days, I really need to read more of the comic!
