The Shifting Nature of Exclusivity

Exclusivity is changing. When I was a kid, I desperately wanted a PlayStation to play Tomb Raider. I drew pictures, I read magazines. I had a Sega Saturn, and could’ve played it perfectly well there. But six-year-old me didn’t know that, and nothing I saw convinced me otherwise. I had a PlayStation that Christmas. A bit after that we went into a little game shop in Birmingham – up near where Currys and Pizza Hut is now, if memory serves.…

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Impressions

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden came out this week. We received a review copy of the game and have been playing it. While our review isn’t ready yet, we did want to share our impressions of the game so far. Here are our thoughts on Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden for the Xbox Series S. I’ve been playing Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden for review. I just got the game this week and I’m still early in it, but I…

Xbox Podcast Was Fair and Focussed – But It Was Too Late

Four Xbox will come to PlayStation, Game Pass will continue getting day one releases and the next Xbox will be the “biggest generational leap yet”. Those were all announcements at the Xbox business update podcast, and it was fair and well-explained. And while they stopped short of saying which four Xbox games would be jumping ship – pun intended – they also refused to rule out future releases. This is testing the waters. It’s still a risk that they’ve not…

BREAKING: Four Xbox Games Coming to PlayStation and Switch

Four Xbox games will be coming to PlayStation and Switch, it has been announced. The games, which haven’t been officially named, will be announced in the not too distant future. Castles of Burgundy Special Edition Was Done Right

I'm firmly in the camp that not all good and classic board games need to have a Special Edition. Far too often we see overproduce special edition games that, while look pretty, are prohibitably expensive and don't really have universal appeal to longtime fans and new players alike. Think, for example, of the 3D Settlers of Catan releases. Beautiful, yes! Practical? Not at all. Accessible to the wider gaming audience? Nope. Castles of Burgundy hits very differently, however, making a few really good improvements to the game table presentation, while also being a very good package for people who are less familiar with the game. Let's dive in and see why this Special Edition gets so much praise from us here at GamesReviews!

Xbox’s Future Rests On a Thursday Evening Podcast

As odd as it might seem, we’ll learn about the future of Xbox through a podcast on Thursday evening. That’s how these things are done now. Gone are the days of corporate press releases and obviously carefully edited talking head videos, replaced with a less obviously stage managed video roundtable. And this isn’t a bad thing. It means we’re going to get the words directly from the horse’s mouth. And those words had better be near perfect. For those not…

Harmonies Coming from Studio Libellud via Asmodee

"Harmonies is not just any game. Yes, you will draw tiles and compete with your opponents to create the best combinations... But the experience goes much further. Because Harmonies is a real ode to nature, to the balance between fauna and flora. It doesn't play on rivalry between species and essence, predation, or the will to power but on the necessity of harmony among all elements of an ecosystem."

Why I Don’t Review Games on Board Game Arena

Here at GamesReviews we get approached more and more often by publishers and developers to check out their games and give our impressions of them. With board games, the process of doing a review is a lot more involved than it is with a video game. You have to wait for the game to be shipped to you, wait for your next game night, play it a few times over a few weeks, before even beginning the process of writing a review. With video games, it's generally a very solo experience. With board games, you are often relying on others to get your work done. As more and more games become available on Board Game Arena, a virtual table where games can be played with people around the globe, we get more pitches to play and review games on that system, as opposed to getting a physical game in the ...
