Backyard Baseball ‘97 Overview
With Baseball starting this week it only makes sense to launch a classic game with the fan favorite Pablo Sanchez. I am hitting the bases in the Android version. This is the first ever release on mobile platforms. Playground Productions and Mega Cat came together to make this possible.
Family Fun
Backyard Baseball ‘97 is loaded with options. On the main menu you can:
- Practice batting ( I definitely need this)
- Look at your Stats
- Conduct a quick game or even play a whole season while getting to draft a team
What makes this game even better is you can play offline without having to worry about an internet connection. I am excited for Backyard sports to be making a comeback. Backyard Baseball ‘97 took me back to my childhood with the 90s feeling. With so many players to choose from to build your team, all of them with different skill sets. I really enjoyed the inclusion of different types of players. This really brings the school yard effect into the game.
Home Run
Backyard Baseball ‘97 has easy controls and you quickly get a good feel on how to play. I started my league where you get to pick the colour and name of your team. After this you get to build the team that best suits the way you play. Clicking on a player brings up their stats; this is important to view when making a selection. Pitching is fun but always remember to keep an eye on your “juice” on the right side of the screen. Juice represents the stamina the pitcher has. Doing well will give you special ability pitches which are good to have on the mound. Batting is pretty straight forward as the selection ranges from power to bunt to grounder, or line drive.
With practice hit timing will come natural to you. I am an all out power player hoping for the big swings. Fielding is a smooth process where you will see where the ball is going to go and use the touch controls to complete the situation in the field.
On the home screen of the game in the right corner there is a green binder; make sure you click on this often throughout your gameplay sequences. Each player has a card here with a little background about them and their abilities.
Bottom of the 9th
After all these years Backyard Baseball ‘97 is still fun even though I am much older. Having vibrant colours mixed with easy to play controls is a win for everyone. I am excited to see what Backyard Sports will bring us next. Get to the diamond and pick this game up.
