More Thoughts From Me #59: Build Your Own Mario Game

Nintendo never needs to build another 2D Mario game. With the release of Super Mario Maker for the 3DS and the Wii U, Nintendo has given players the tools to build Mario levels. Why would Nintendo ever need to build another 2D Mario? In today’s More Thoughts, I’ll talk about Super Mario Maker, the future of 2D Mario, if we’ll ever see another Super Mario Maker, and I’ll share with you codes for a couple of my Mario levels!

I love games where you can build your own levels. I was a huge fan of LittleBigPlanet for the Playstation 3. But Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker is something else. Mario has been around forever. Nintendo has always been the one to give us Mario levels. But with Mario Maker, suddenly we could build our own games! And the Maker included is so easy to use! This game is absolutely brilliant, but it could also mean the death of the new 2D Mario games.

Super Mario Maker didn’t include everything to create a Mario game, but it included most of the tools neccessary and people have created some really amazing levels. Mario Maker gives you the tools to create levels and to play tons of other people’s levels. Why would we ever need another 2D Mario game? I’m not sure why. There’s just so much to do in Mario Maker. Even when Nintendo eventually turns off the servers for Super Mario Maker for Wii U and 3DS, players will still be able to create their own levels and play them. But what about a sequal to Mario Maker? Will we ever see that?

As I mentioned, there are some elements of 2D Mario games that were not included in Super Mario Maker. I could see Nintendo creating a sequel to Super Mario Maker, with perhaps graphics for Super Mario Bros 2 and the Super Mario Land titles from Gameboy. Even if they just had the same graphics as the first, there are a lot of new tools that could be added in a sequel! Super Mario Maker 2 could be amazing. I just don’t see a new 2D Mario game being as fun without the Maker element…
