Creative Sound BlasterX H6 Review
I must admit that I have not heard much from Creative in the way of accessories lately. Years ago, I remember them being at the top of the food-chain when it came to desktop speakers and various other accessories. Computers, and what we do with them, has changed greatly over this time. Now, with the gaming accessory market being so large and the competition so high, how is Creative keeping up? Let’s take a look!
The good folks over at Creative sent us the Sound BlasterX H6 Gaming Headset(yes, it’s quite a mouthful) to take for a spin, and what we found was a very unassuming, yet surprisingly powerful headset. The Sound BlasterX H6 just feels good; it is nice and light but still feels very sturdy, the fabric cups are well cushioned but still offer lots of space and breathability.
The sound itself is as good as any headset I’ve used, with booming lows, crisp highs and immersive 7.1 virtual surround sound. This. to me, is the single most important feature of a headset. I will wear a slightly less comfortable headset or deal with a less than stellar microphone if the sound is far superior. With the Sound BlasterX H6 you no longer have to make these compromises. It is the full package, wrapped in one sharp-looking, lightweight package.
Its 50mm Neodymium drivers combine with Sound Blaster’s full lineup of audio enhancement features to provide the ultimate gaming experience. This includes both ‘Scout Mode’ which is designed to extended your hearing range in any game and ClearComms which provides noise reduction on your outgoing microphone, so that your teammates will hear you loud and clear.
As for style, I quite enjoy the minimalistic look and feel of the Sound BlasterX H6. It doesn’t have much in the way of excessive features (RGB lighting aside), but it looks clean, sharp and fits like a dream. The memory foam earcups are extraordinarily breathable and easily replaceable – not that you should find yourself needing to replace them any time soon.
While the headset is not wireless, this simply means no charging required. Feel free to plug n play with any console as the Sound BlasterX H6 is compatible with the Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC. This type of versatile compatibility really outclasses some other headsets that are programmed to work only with one specific console, thereby forcing you to purchase two headsets if you own both an Xbox and a PlayStation. No need to worry about that anymore.
I would be remiss if I did not mention one final feature, and trust me, this is a big one. Have you ever been so immersed in your gaming that you missed a delivery, someone calling you for dinner or failed to notice someone walk in the room and have them scare the living daylights out of you? Fully equipped with Ambient Monitoring, this Sound BlasterX H6 helps prevent such encounters by allowing you to toggle listening to your surroundings while playing. This sound does not get transmitted through your comms to teammates but is instead only for you, and only when you want it.
Sound Quality: 4.5/5 The dynamic range and depth of sound with 7.1 virtual surround sound is a dream come true for this headset.
Mic Quality: 5/5 I truly don’t believe you could have a better microphone without getting a standalone.
Comfort: 4/5 Bigger headed people may feel a slightly increased pressure on the ears, but overall the comfort level is very solid.
Durability 4.5/5 With solid construction and replaceable earcups, this headset was built to last.
Compatibiltiy: 5/5 Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC; you name it, this headset can do it.
Overall Value: 4.75/5 This headset, while perhaps priced a little high for the casual user, will happily fill any role you put it in. For the price, it is certainly one of the strongest competitors that I have had the pleasure to review. My hat goes off to the folks at Creative for putting out such a solid product.
