The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak 2 Review
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak 2 is a jrpg published by NIS America. We never played first The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak. So this second game is our introduction to the story and characters of the series. Did we enjoy the game? Here’s our review of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2 for Nintendo Switch!
In The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak 2, Van Arkrides is visited by an old friend asking for help. Soon he join forces with her to investigate a mysterious attack. It isn’t long before they get pulled into a much larger story and reunite with even more of their old friends.
Trails through Daybreak 2’s story is so confusing. The above is the best way we can even describe the story. This game throws characters and situations at the player quickly. If you haven’t played the first Trails through Daybreak, we didn’t, then you’ll be scratching your head as to what the heck is going on. The recap at the start doesn’t help at all.
The game also spends way too much time on pointless dialogue and you’ll be watching cutscenes more than playing the game at times. The story isn’t that interesting and we found ourselves wanting to skip the cutscenes and go right to the gameplay.
The Japanese role-playing gameplay in Trails through Daybreak 2 involves a lot of exploration of the town and dungeons. There’s also a combat system that starts in real-time and can be taken to turn-based if you want. The characters have many more abilities in turn-based mode.
Combat in Trails Through Daybreak 2 is the best part of the game. It easily goes from real-time to turn-based with no load times. This is the sort of game where if you like to level grind, you’ll have plenty of opportunity. Though, if you didn’t play the first Trails Through Daybreak, we’re not sure why you’d play the second game.
Legend of Hereos: Trails Through Daybreak 2 isn’t a bad game, but it has way too many cutscenes and while its battle system is fun, its not something that’ll keep you playing the game if you’re not a fan of the series. And while its graphics are good, its not perfect.
Trails through Daybreak 2 has good graphics, especially its characters, though some of the environments don’t look as good. The game isn’t pushing the Switch and feels more like a last generation game visually.
Audio wise, the voice acting is good and the music is not bad. Nothing stunning here but it does its job well enough.
If you liked the first Trails through daybreak, then you may like this second game, but if you never played the first one, then you may want to avoid this game.
If you didn’t play the first Trails through Daybreak, coming into the second one would be like coming into the middle of movie or tv series. The game throws tons of characters at the player and barely introduces them and spends a lot of time on cutscenes and dialogue.
The actual gameplay is not bad, the battle system is a lot of fun, but if you don’t care for the story, there’s no reason to play this game. This is definitely a game we only recommend for Legend of Heroes fans.
