The Flood Components Overview and Impressions

The Flood is one large and heavy game, but just because a box is packed with goodies doesn’t make those goodies come together in a way that’s fun or entertaining. I have played a few games of The Flood already and can confirm it’s a lot of fun, but that’s not what this article is about – let’s take a look at the game’s various components and see whether they live up to the Kickstarter hype!

The Flood was sent to us by the designer and publisher, Bedouin Games. We received the miniatures version of the game – while I think I would have preferred the Meeple version with all the wooden components, I was more impressed than I thought I would be when I got the lid off the box.

There is a ton of cardboard in this game, but it’s all nice and thick, and potentially even linen finished? I have no complaints with the quality of the games cards, the tokens, or the game board. They are all beautifully illustrated and informative, with lots of important game information printed in strategic locations.

There are a ton of cardboard components in this game and they are all superb. I hate when we punch a game that uses a lot of cardboard and it is all sub-par. I have no issues with cardboard tokens, even when wood is an option, as long as the cardboard is thick and durable – it is here.

The game’s highlight is going to be the miniatures or the wood player pieces, depending on which version you get. We have the miniatures version, and despite my concern that perhaps the quality of these miniatures was going to be subpar, they actually turned out really great. I’ve seen better miniatures, but at a much higher price point. For what you pay for The Flood, I think the miniature quality is far better than what anyone should expect.

There are also a fair number of cards in The Flood, and while I don’t think it is necessary to sleeve the cards in this game since you won’t be shuffling very often – think Catan resource decks. That being said, I think the included insert allows for sleeved cards should you want to go that route, which I really like.

And that brings us to the game’s insert. I think any game that has an insert is a win, but more companies need to put in graphics to help sort the various pieces and where they are intended to go. I spent a long time trying to pack up The Flood, and now that I have everything snuggly in the box, I’m still 95% sure I didn’t put things where the designers wanted me to. It works for me right now, so I suppose that is a bonus? But still, I would have loved to see a re-pack guide, or at the very least, an official or sponsored video on how to do it.

Overall, I’m really happy with the quality of The Flood, and anyone who backed this game on Kickstarter is probably pretty pleased with their item. Again, I think I would have preferred the wooden Meeple version of the game, but the miniatures are fantastic as well, and it all looks phenomenal when out on the table.
