Unboxing the Nightmare Before Christmas: Take Over the Holiday’s

There is a brand new Nightmare Before Christmas game available at retail this October, and our friends at Asmodee Canada and Mixlore were kind enough to send over the game a bit early. We’ve already played a few games and have enjoyed it immensely, but while we wait for that first impressions article, let’s take a look at what comes in the box!

There isn’t a lot to talk about here. There are dozens of little cardboard tokens that will be used for tracking points throughout the game. One side of the token is Halloween points and the other side is Christmas points (you’ll want them depending on who you are). The cardboard isn’t the thickest I’ve seen, but for a game that will have a lower price point than most when it hits shelves, I think it is perfectly adequate here.

There are 6 playable characters in the box – Jack Skelington, the Mayor, Doctor Finkelstien, Sally, Oogie Boogie, and Santa Claus. Each character has a deck of 20 cards. Those cards are broken down into two stacks of cards numbered 1-10. One stack just has the numbers, while the other stack has the numbers and a special ability those players can use.

There are also player boards for each character, which will provide a bit more information on how your character plays. These are really great, but share the same thickness as the tiles. Again, as a more budget friendly title this Halloween, I don’t expect more for what you will pay.

There are also round location tiles which are not cardboard but rather standard card quality. I do wish these locations were cardboard tiles (like the scoring points and player boards), but the cards will work OK. There is also a round tracker, a wooden pumpkin piece for tracking rounds, and a Zero standee.

For the price you are going to pay, I think the components here are perfectly fine! Stay tuned as we will be showcasing the game here on the site soon!
