Oath – Components Overview and Impressions
Oath is a really unique, very deep game where players will have different factions with asymmetrical powers. Throughout the game, players will vie for control of a fantasy land – will you have the power to control The Cradle, The Hinterlands, and The Provinces? Only time will tell! What I love about Oath, and all games from Leder, is the wonderful production value. Sure, you might pay a bit more for a Leder Games title, but they are definitely worth it! Let’s take a look at Oath!
Once you get the box open and the game booklets removed, there are a few punch board sheets you will need to take care of. As is becoming much more common – although still worth mentioning – punching out all of these pieces is extremely easy. They come out of the punch board without tearing, which is great. There is nothing worse than punching a brand new game and ruining a few cardboard tiles in the process!
The cardboard player boards are fantastic as well. They are nice and thick, and provide a ton of detail that players will need to play the game.
The wooden components for all of the factions are fantastic. Like with their other popular game, Root, the artwork across the board is fantastic, but the way these little wooden pieces are detailed is phenomenal. Instead of stamping the wooden pieces with ugly “cut out” images, they instead use the pieces themselves as the characters, and stamp on detail to make them what they are. The other game pieces – the various tokens – are all cardboard, although there is an option to upgrade those pieces with a pack available for purchase on the Leder Games website!
What makes Oath so fantastic, however, is the game board. It would have been SO easy for Leder Games to include a folded board game board into the box, but instead the company has opted to include a neoprene mat. While neoprene mats are not for everyone – I do find them a bit muted in colour when compared to the actual boards they replace – the neoprene mat for Oath fits the look of the game amazingly! There is a great spot for it inside the box as well.
The game also includes a good number of unique dice for attacking and defending, as well as a plastic tray for the game’s various pieces to make setup a much quicker experience.
Oath is not a simple game by all accounts, but we hear it is fantastic to play. We have a saying here on the website – a good game can be a let down because of bad components. Thankfully, that doesn’t look like it will be a problem here!
