The 5 Most Successful Video Games of All Time

We all love playing games, and every time the news of a new game hits, we’re in seventh heaven. But while you may follow the gaming industry like the bible, there’s a good chance you don’t know which are the 5 most successful games of all time AKA the 5 best-selling games of all time (Hint: It’s not the Indian game Andar Bahar that you love). Go on. Read the list. You might be pleasantly surprised.

  1. Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds

We start off with a fairly recent game that pretty much revolutionized the battle royale genre. It’s a game where 100 players are dropped onto an island to battle it out. Players have to combat using a wide assortment of guns and weapons, some stealth, and luck to become the last one standing. With Early Access for the game starting in Match 2017, PUBG reached 50 million copies in June 2018, making it the fifth-best-selling game of all time.

Since then, however, the game has sold a considerable number of copied more, but with the game holding the no. 4 spot more than 30 million copies ahead, PUBG probably won’t be able to step up. As of June 2018, PUBG and PUBG Mobile combine have a staggering 400 million registered players. However, free mobile downloads don’t count toward sales.

  1. Wii Sports

Wii Sports is a 2006 sports video game released by Nintendo for the Wii console. The game is a collection made up of five sports simulations. These simulations demonstrate the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote. You can play games like tennis, baseball, golf, bowling, and boxing using the Wii Remote. The device mimics actions performed in real-life sports such as hitting a punch or swinging a tennis racket.

Nintendo’s official sales figures reveal that Wii Sports is the company’s best-selling game ever. While all other games on this list were coupled with a console at some point, Wii Sports was coupled in almost all territories right after the launch of Nintendo Wii. The game sold 82.86 million copies and is the top-selling single-platform exclusive of all time.

  1. Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is a 2013 action-adventure game made by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It’s set within the fictional state of San Andreas and we play a single-player story that involves controlling three criminals in their efforts to commit over-the-top heists while being under pressure from powerful crime figures and a government agency. The game is open-world, meaning you can roam freely across the map’s countryside or in the busy city of Los Santos.

Grand Theft Auto became the third video game to ever break 100 million copies sold. While the game stands a firm third on the list of best-selling games of all time, it also has the record of the most profitable entertainment release ever. It had generated a total of $6 billion USD in revenue, which is higher than any other game, book, or movie.

  1. Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Swedish Markus Persson. It was released by Mojang in 2011 and purchased by Microsoft in 2014. In this game, you explore an intentionally blocky, pixelated procedurally generated 3D world to discover and extract raw materials, build structures, extract raw materials, and even fight computer-controlled enemies.

In October 2018k Microsoft announced that Minecraft had reached 154 million copied sold. The game has a total player count of 250 million worldwide (with over 100 million players in China not excluded in sales totals due to the fact that Minecraft is free in China).

  1. Tetris

Yep, Tetris is the best-selling video game of all time. You didn’t’ expect it didn’t you? I’m sure you already know what the game is about so onwards to the sales figures. The Tetris Company’s managing director has revealed that the game has 425 million paid mobile downloads alone. However, if we consider all the figures up until now, Tetris has sold more than 500 million+ copies worldwide. Its position as the number 1 on this list is (possibly) eternal.
